Homeschool Days | La Brea Tar Pits and Museum

Homeschool Days

On Homeschool Days, homeschoolers get free access the museum all day! Explore the tar pits outside, view the collections inside the museum, and participate in special Homeschool Day programming.

Visit the Tar Pits on a day just for you!

The La Brea Tar Pits & Museum is proud to offer four days each school year when Homeschoolers can come free of charge! Each Homeschool Day has an assigned theme with free drop-in activities designed to help you and your students get the most out of our exhibits.

We collaborate with our sister museum, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, for a total of eight Homeschool Days each year, so check out their website for more information. We hope to see you at all eight!

Homeschool Day dates and themes for the 2017-18 school year are listed below. Subscribe to our mailing list at the bottom of the page to get reminders before each Homeschool Day!

Wednesday, October 11 – Meet the Mammoths!
Camels, giant ground sloths, and of course...mammoths! Spend this Homeschool Day with the biggest mammals of the Ice Age. We’ll explore what life was like for these amazing herbivores in Pleistocene Los Angeles, and how their fossils give us clues about survival and extinction.

Friday, January 12 – L.A.’s Carnivores
From the saber-toothed cats and dire wolves of the past to the mountain lions and coyotes of today, Los Angeles has always been home to charismatic carnivores. Learn how we use fossils to study the predators of the past, and how our research can help conserve carnivores into the future!

Tuesday, March 13 – Bugs and Botany
What do insect fossils teach us about the Ice Age environment? How do plant remains get preserved in asphalt? Spend this Homeschool Day with two often under-appreciated groups of organisms: insects and plants! We think you’ll find these resilient Ice Age survivors surprisingly captivating and incredibly significant to the study of Pleistocene Los Angeles!

Wednesday, June 6 – Process of Paleontology
This Homeschool Day, we will explore how paleontology can help us uncover the mysteries of the past. By studying fossils, we are able to imagine ancient ecosystems and recreate extinct creatures. Learn how fossils are found, excavated, recorded, and researched right here at the La Brea Tar Pits: the largest active urban paleontological site in the world.
