The Natural "Brain Cast" of a Dire Wolf

After an animal becomes trapped at Rancho La Brea, the brain decomposes while asphalt and sediment fill the inside of the skull. In the case of this dire wolf (Canis dirus), this process created an extremely rare and fully intact brain cast.
