Field Trip FAQShare
How much does a field trip cost?
Admission is FREE for all students and up to one adult for every five students. Additional adults beyond the 1:5 ratio must purchase a discounted $10 chaperone ticket on the day of the visit. Additional adults may also be charged for Ice Age Encounters. Exemptions apply, call 323.857.6300 x 111 for more information.
Does my school group need a reservation?
Yes, making a reservation in advance ensures you a spot on the day of your visit, gives you the opportunity to sign up for guided programs, performances, and exhibits, and expedites your check-in process. We ask that all schools fill out and submit an online reservation request form, located here.
Please submit your request at least three weeks before your first choice of visit date to allow us time to process it. We do our best to accomodate last-minute requests, but we cannot guarantee availability.
How far in advance should I submit my reservation request?
Request a reservation early for the best selection of possible dates and programs. Registration opens August 15 for the upcoming school year.
If you are interested in a spring visit, guided programs (October - February), Ice Age Encounters, or the Observation Pit, submit your request as early as possible. These free reservations are extremely popular and fill up quickly!
What if I'm an LAUSD school?
If you are planning on using a bus provided by LAUSD, please book through the district School Journeys office at 213.580.2950. Please note: If using district transportation, a district representative may submit the visit request for you, please check with them before submitting a duplicate request. If you are an LAUSD school but have made other arrangements for transportation, please fill out our online request form, located here.
How many students can I bring on my field trip?
We require a minimum of 10 students for a field trip. We ask that groups bringing 6th - 12th grade students limit their visit to 150 students per school per day.*
*Exemptions may apply, call 323.857.6300 x 111 for more information.
How many adult chaperones should I bring?
We require a minimum one adult chaperone for every ten students and a maximum of one to five, including teachers. Due to capacity limitations for certain programs, all of your adults may not be able to participate if you exceed the recommended 1:5 ratio.
Additional adults beyond a 1:5 ratio must purchase a discounted $10 chaperone ticket on the day of the visit. Additional adults may also be charged for Encounters. Exemptions apply, call 323.857.6300 x 111 for more information.
How do I cancel or reschedule my field trip?
To reschedule, please fill out a new online reservation request form, located here. Make sure you have your order number handy!
To cancel a trip, give us a call at 323.857.6300 x 111 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Note that all existing reservations will be released when your new request is submitted. We do our best to preserve your original schedule, but we cannot guarantee that everything you had scheduled on your first date will be available on your new date. Your new request will be added to the general queue and processed in the order in which it was received. You will receive your updated confirmation within two weeks of submitting your new request.
Can my school visit on the weekend?
Yes! We do reserve a limited number of spaces for school groups who can only visit on the weekend.
Note that all weekend field trips to the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum are self-guided.
Do you have educational resources available?
Absolutely! See our Field Trip Resources page to download lesson plans and activities for your students, and Chaperone Guides for your adults.
What kind of educational programs do you offer school groups?

Can we store lunches inside the Museum?
With 5.5 million fossils in the Museum's collection, we unfortunately do not have any room to store school lunches! Lunches should be left on the bus, in the car, or securely zipped in backpacks.
Planning on purchasing lunch? Click here to find a list of restaurants within easy walking distance of the Museum.
Where can we eat lunch?
Classes may picnic in the surrounding park. Take this opportunity to see the Lake Pit, find asphalt seeps, and, of course, roll down the hill!
On very rainy days, we have you covered (literally). The Museum provides indoor lunch areas for all school groups. You'll reserve a spot for indoor lunch at check-in on the day of your field trip, so no need to worry about signing up for a lunch spot in advance.
Where should we park?
Buses can park for free on Curson Avenue between Sixth Street and Wilshire Boulevard.
Private cars and vans can park in our Car Park for $12 per vehicle.
How do I arrange a photo opportunity for my students?
